Meth contamination and rental properties
Whether you own an investment property, or are looking to move into one; you want to make a safe choice. Generally, meth contamination doesn’t mix well here. Aside from the nasty name your property will get, it can cause disastrous health effects. This includes rashes, depression, respiratory complications just to name a few.
The meth problem in New Zealand is widespread and increasing. It is estimated that around 2.5 percent of the adult population in New Zealand are using methamphetamines. This figure rises to 8.7 percent however in the 18-24 year-old bracket. This vulnerable age group is more likely to be in rentals which is where meth is strongly presented.
Around 75% of meth labs discovered by police have been in rental properties. One of the main reasons this could be so high is because the user won’t be left with the damage costs as much as the landlord. However, it is important to keep an eye on your tenants movements, as you can stop further contamination in its tracks. Things to look out for include:
Gloves, hot plates glass jars and coffee filters
Yellowish brown stains on the walls
Blacked out windows
More activity at night
Security systems
Amonia smell
